Camo Booties

I made Ara some new booties for this fall.  I thought I'd try out making some with a patterned outside and lined with fleece and they worked!  I love love love these booties.  Trav made the buttons from deer antler sheds and I've been waiting for a good project to use them on.  I think these suit them perfectly!

I'm off to Saskatchewan for the weekend now.  Hopefully I have some great pictures to share with you all when we get back!

Birthday!

Brayer had a birthday on Saturday so we threw him a party in the backyard.  Nothing fancy, just food, friends, some balloons and presents of course.  I didn't take very many pictures but here's my favorite of the lot.  Cupcake time and the birthday boy took his under the picnic table to devour it in peace.

Some Friends

Meet some new friends of mine.  That's Freda on the far left, then Gordon who is resting beside Penelope, (the one with all the hair) and lastly Ted.  I made these little friends a couple days ago.  I really only meant to make Freda, but once I started making her I realized she couldn't be alone so I made Gordon, Penelope, and Ted as well.  Too bad I plan to eventually send them off to all different homes.  I hope they won't miss each other too much.  Freda will be staying here with us, under the watchful care of Ara.  Ara loves Freda despite all the time she spends chewing on her.  I hope Freda doesn't mind too much.

You can make your own little friends if you'd like.  It's real simple and there's a pattern in Lotta Jansdotter's book  Simple Sewing For Baby
The next time I make some of these little dudes I'm thinking about putting a little rattle heart inside, or maybe some real crinkly innards.

More Tag Toys

I wasn't going to post about these little guys yet because well, my sister will likely be receiving one or two of them at her baby shower in a couple weeks, but every time I save something to post I always forget.  I'm pretty sure she knows she getting some anyway so it's not like I'm really ruining the surprise.... right?

Anyway I sewed up a bunch more tag toys.  They come together pretty quick once all the ribbons are cut and pinned so I just did that part in front of a movie one evening and then sewed them all together the next morning.  I have a feeling this will be my new go to present for baby showers.  Ara still loves the two I made her and I know that the better she gets with her hands the more she'll like them.

I'm thinking that if I ever make one for a baby I already know the name of I might just monogram it as well.  Give it a bit more texture and something more to look at.

I also just want to say a huge THANK YOU to all you folk who left me such amazing comments on my label tutorial.  I hope you all get good use out of it and I definitely want to see your tags when you're done making them, so send me an email if you blog about it or just send me a pic!

Making Your Own Labels

When I first starting making stuff for my Etsy shop I quickly realized that I needed some kind of label.  I looked around at different etsy shops and label shops for a company to make them for me but I then I realized I could probably make them myself fairly easily!  So I did!  I've been making my own labels since then and I find a really cheap and easy option.

I thought I'd share with you how I make them so you can make your own too!

The first thing you need though is a stamp.  I got mine made online at Staples and I'm pretty happy with what I got.  I think it cost me about $20 including shipping.  That's the biggest expense when making your own labels.

here's the stamp I ordered after about a years worth of use :)

What you'll all need:
-customized stamp
-fabric paint in the color of your choice.  I've always found black looks and works best.
-plain, matte ribbon OR a long strip of hemmed fabric (I've only ever used ribbon, but I figure hemmed fabric should work just as well)
-a piece of flat plastic like a yogurt container lid
-felt

Step One:

-Get out your yogurt lid and squirt a decent amount of fabric paint onto it.
-Take your felt and cut a square big enough for your stamp.  Place the felt on top of the fabric paint and pat it down until it just starts to soak up.

-Using your stamp, "stamp" the felt until the paint is fully soaked in.  This will be your stamp pad!

Step 2:
-Unroll your whole piece of ribbon and lay it on a flat surface.
-Dab your stamp onto the felt just like a stamp pad and then test it on a piece of paper first.
It's hard to get the amount of paint to felt ratio just right so make sure you check the stamp before you stamp the ribbon each time.  Once you're comfortable with how it stamps start stamping your ribbon!

-Make sure you leave a decent amount of space between each stamp so that you have space to turn the raw cut edges under when you sew your labels on.
-Keep going until you have all your ribbon stamped!

Step 3:
-Read the label on your container of fabric paint and follow the finishing directions on it.  Some need to be heat treated and some just need about 72 hours to dry.
-I usually don't cut the labels apart until I'm ready to use them.  Then I just cut one off when I need it.  It really saves you on losing ribbon space due to fraying.

Step 4:
-When you are ready to sew your labels on, simply iron each raw edge under and sew all the way around!

here's a finished bag with a label.  I've used both a straight stitch and a zigzag to attach them and they both look pretty good.

So that's about it.  I hope this inspires you to go ahead and make your own!  They don't always turn out perfectly but that's the beauty of handmade.

*** UPDATE***  I've now found out that you can buy the same type of ribbon (cotton twill tape) by the yard at stores like Fabricland!  So much cheaper and now I can buy and make so many more labels at once!

I've also found a place where you can order fabric ink pads, right here. Although you don't get as deep of an imprint, it does work pretty good and it's a lot faster than the paint/felt method.

Rosie's Walk

Have any of you ever seen the book Rosie's Walk?  If you haven't you really should.  I actually picked up this copy at a thrift store for .50!!  It's in perfect new condition and when I saw the cover I knew I had to look inside.  The illustrations are beautiful and the story is fantastic.  It's all about a fox trying to catch a chicken but fate seems to get in the way and one thing after another happens to him.  Oddly enough I actually bought this book for me, not the kids.  I just know what my boys will do to it and I want to keep it nice so I can look at it forever.  Maybe it'll be one of those books that I take out only to read to them, not for them to read to themselves.  (aka destroying)

Treasuries

I've been a bit addicted to curating treasuries on Etsy lately.  Seriously it's so fun.  There are so many beautiful things that lovely people have made and I love finding my favorites and putting them together for people to see.  Here's the most recent one I've curated.

You can see the actual treasury here

I have also been featured in a few treasuries myself which I am ALWAYS super stoked about.  Here's the most recent of those.

You can see this full treasury here!

Bulletin Board

I finally got around to fixing up an old bulletin board/white board combo I had.  I basically just took the frame off of it, painted it dark brown, pinned some fabric to the bulletin board and then got Trav to put the frame back on!  I don't have a before picture but take my word for it, it looks WAY better now!

and now you all know what I need for groceries!

so you can see where it hangs in my kitchen

Etsy Love

Most of you know my little sister has an awesome shop on etsy but did you know a couple of my cousins do too?  Except actually neither of them are really my cousins, but sort of!

First "cousin"
Jen!  She isn't my cousin by blood but she married my cousin so I figure that counts.  Her shop is awesome and I love it because, well, it involves sewing!

Jen's shop is Little Metal Mis(s)ter and her tag line is "bootys to babies, I've got your parts covered!!"  Love that!  So far Jen sells mostly his and her undie sets and clothes and toys for babies and toddlers.  You can check out all her awesome stuff in her shop Little Metal Mis(s)ter

Second "cousin"

Christina!  Christina also isn't technically my cousin she's my moms cousin!  So I'm not sure what that makes her to me, my second cousin maybe?  First cousin once removed?  I don't know, maybe you do?  Anyway Christina does amazing artwork and I've been eyeing up some of paintings for a while.  Chris' shop is Alepeca Arts.  Go check it out, seriously you'll love her stuff.

So there you go, some pretty sweet talent in my family hey?

Tag Toy for Ara

I didn't feel like doing anything on my to do list today so instead I decided to make Ara a toy.  The first one turned out great but is still too big/difficult for her to hold so then I had to make another one of course!  I've never made a taggie blankie before and wow does she love it!

This is the first one I made.  I love love love the fabrics on it and I made it crinkly!  It crinkles when she plays with and guess how I managed that?
Yup!  I sewed a (cleaned) Tostitos bag inside it!

Here's taggie toy #2.  This one is much smaller and easier for Ara to hold and it's also super soft.  The minky dots fabric is the same fabric I made her blankie out of so I'm hoping she loves it even more because of that.

Making these was super fun and now I have one more baby gift idea to add to the list!

Black Shelly Bag

I made this bag about a month ago but realized I hadn't thought to share it with you all yet!  This is the actual Shelly Bag.  The bag that actually ended up in the hands of my sister in law Shelly.  The pictures are also taken by her because of course I forgot to take pictures before I gave it to her!  I have a few more of these bags in the works and they should be up in my shop soon!

Busy Busy!

We are officially out of the "newborn sleeps all the time" stage and on to the "wants to be interactive" stage of Ara's life.  It's fantastic because she's so adorable and fun to talk to, but it also means being even busier than before!

I have managed to get some sewing in though, thanks to a four day long weekend for my hubby.  Here's what I've been up to!

Three shoulder/diaper bags!  I love this bag, it's great for going out with a lot of stuff and not looking like I'm carrying a diaper bag, because well technically it's not!  You can find all three of these bags in my shop!

Let's Go Fishing!

I finally got some fishing sets sewn up for my shop!  I made one set in "girl" colors and one in "boy" colors.  These sets went together pretty good but definately took time.  I'm not sure if they will really be worth selling at the price I think I get for them because they are so time consuming but I did want to give a try, so we'll see how they sell!

The fish are made out of quilting cotton and have a super strong magnet near the mouth.  The pond is made entirely out of felt and the fishing rod is bamboo!  Trav drilled the hole in the top of the rod for me and sanded it off all nice.  He's a handy guy to have around :)

These fishing sets are awesome, Kaed still loves his and I love that I can just throw the fish in the wash when they get dirty.  Definitely a must with boys!

Want one of these sets?  Check out my Etsy shop!
