Really Simple Hair Clip Holder - A Tutorial

Ever since Ara was born I've been "collecting" hair clips for her.  At first it was just the excitement of finally having a baby girl, and one that hair on top of that but now it's actually necessary to clip her hair out of her face.  There are just too many amazing hair clip makers on etsy so I just keep buying more.  I was getting kind of annoyed with digging through a small box to find the one I wanted so I decided to make a pretty hanging to store them all.  I wanted something that was easy to make, and easy to take apart in case I want to change up the background fabric or the ribbon in the future.  I really like what I came up with and thought I would share how I did it.

Here's what you need:

-A plain cork board.  You could buy one with a frame, take it off, follow all these instructions and then put the frame back on at the end, but I decided to just use a rectangular piece of cork board

-flat style push pins

-a piece of fabric a few inches bigger than your piece of cork.

-ribbon.  I used 2 pieces of thicker stuff for bigger clips and one piece of a thinner width ribbon for smaller clips

Step one:
-iron our your piece of fabric and drape it evenly over your cork board.

Step 2:

Flip your cork board and fabric over and pin all four corners of the fabric tightly over the cork.

Step 3:
-Lay out the ribbons in the places you want them then pin them in place on the back of the cork board.  Then add a ribbon to hang it from, pinning in the top two corners

Flip your board over, attach your hair clips, and hang it on the wall!

One of my favorite things about this is that if I ever decide I want to use that piece of fabric for something else, or I just want different fabric on the clip holder, I can just take all the pins off and replace it!  Because I didn't do any stapling, gluing, or sewing that piece of fabric is still good. (just don't hang it in a sunny place if you don't want the fabric to fade)

In case you wanted to know where I got all my amazing hair clips from, here you go!  Hair clips on the bottom left came from the Giddy Up and Grow shop, all the clips on the middle ribbon are from the Barefoot Clips shop, and the ones on the far right ribbon all come from the Paperdoll Accessories shop!

  1. Cute! I had a ribbon pinned to my wall for a while, super simple, this is much cuter.

  2. I've been thinking of doing something like this for Molly's too. This is a great way of doing it... now I don't have to figure it out myself. :) Only thing is, for her I also have a bunch of headbands and ponytail holders as well.

  3. I thought about that Miriam, you could also sew a pocket onto the fabric before you hung it for ponytails and maybe screw in a hook for headbands?

  5. I was actually just thinking about getting a wooden box with a hinged lid from Dollarama (I think they have those in the craft aisle) and covering the top with fabric and ribbons the way you did the corkboard. You should be able to push pins into the wood - as long as it's not so thin the pins poke out the other side. Then put the headbands and ponytail holders inside the box. I'll think about it a little more.

  7. Oh, and another idea for headbands... I saw this on another blog: http://www.simplymodernmom.com/2010/07/simply-said-nikki-of-the-salty-pineappe/ you could incorporate this (sewn ribbons) into your display. Then it wouldn't be all dangly, but would hold headbands too! :)

  8. I REALLY wish I had known that you liked hair clips. When I made her quilt, I also made her a few hair clips but wasn't sure of your take on them so I didn't mail them Lol! Ooops

  10. i like how easily this could be personalized to match any room... thanks for sharing :) might look into a similar concept for earrings (although i imagine you'd have to keep a separate container for all of the backs...) great idea :)
