Travis built a box to grow our potatoes in this year. I can't wait to see how it works out. It will definately save us a ton of room in the garden. The idea is that he'll build up the sides, and the dirt as the plant grows, which is supposed to make sure you get a large yield of potatoes.
As of now I plan (or have started already) to plant tomatoes, potatoes, butternut squash, beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, asparagus, and onions. I'm doing some tomatoes in the garden and some in pots on my deck, that way I'll have enough to make tomato sauce this fall.
and after I sanded it down...
I'm definately looking forward to eating most of our meals on our "new" table this summer. I have also been thinking about doing some stenciling on the top.... I'll have to go see what Michaels has in that department.
We also got Travis' dad to pick up some big jugs from a farmer he knows to make rain barrels. Trav cut off the top, rinsed them out really well, and put a small tap on the bottom. Then he got some bendable rain gutter attachments and placed them going into the barrels. He also built some stands for them. Hopefully this will save us a bunch of water.

Your garden sounds awesome. I'm jealous. Is the tilled dirt on the opposite side of your house than where Fable runs around? I'm trying to picture it. And it's such a good idea to collect rain water for watering, mom told me she's doing that this year too because water prices have gone up so much. And your picnic table looks so good already! I actually saw a DIY post on Design Sponge where someone had stenciled their table top, but I can't remember when that was. I think that would look really cool.
yeah! I just saw those rain barrels at an Earth Day/how to live greener festival. Waayyy better than a poor little bucket collecting the rain. Nice! I can't wait to have a garden. Home-grown tastes so much better than store-bought too.
I can't wait to get our garden all planted, too. I love your potato box idea. I may have to show Tom how Travis did it so he can build me one. I've also got to get some rain barrels put up. I love reading your blog...it really gets me motivated with lots of ideas...which means Tom probably hates your blog (more work for him!! ha).
